Chapter 12 posted!

Chapter 12 is posted!  Yay!  Woohoo!  Yum yum yum!!

In Chapter 12, Turbel’s kidnapper and Irevil make evil plans . . . or are they even really that evil?  And what is Turbel up to?  Oh, goodness, the suspense!

Coming next in Chapter 13, Skelan, Mosara, and Kaltin meet up with an old witch friend of Kaltin’s who might have some info on the whereabouts of Turbel’s apprentice.  (They won’t meet Turbel’s apprentice yet, though… I’m actually working on that chapter now, where Turbel’s apprentice comes in… but it’s extremely difficult to write as I want it to be an extremely important scene… bwa ha ha ha!!)

If anyone’s actually reading this, hope you enjoy!

Chapter 10 and 11 posted!

Chapter 10 and 11, both pretty short chapters, have been posted! Stay tuned for Chapter 12, in which two new characters are introduced, and we get a glimpse at what the bad guys are up to… bum bum bum! Then, in Chapter 13, yet another character is introduced: an old witch, an old friend of Kaltin’s.

I’ve got another question, if there’s anyone out there reading . . . in the chapters coming, like 13, 14, 15, 16, I start going back and forth between different people (the enemies and the good guys) and the time of day is not in sync. In other words, I may have a scene with characters just waking up, and then jump to a scene with the enemies at dusk, so you’re not exactly getting the events chronologically. As a reader, would this be something you don’t notice, because the storylines are seperate, or would it be confusing?

If it is confusing, I won’t fix it until I start editing, which I won’t start until I finish writing the entire novel, so it’s not like I’m going to change anything around anytime soon. But I’d be interested in what you think on the matter nonetheless.

Thanks for reading! :-)

Chapter 9 finally posted!

It’s been more than a year, but I’m still working on this story, and Chapter 9 has finally been posted, in which Skelan sees something in the “mind glass” … next week or so I’ll post the next two chapters. Chapter 10 is a shorty, in which Kaltin tries to figure who’s behind Turbel’s kidnapping. Chapter 11 is also a shorty, in which the three travelers (Skelan, Mosara, and Kaltin) leave Turbel’s home to go to a city… it sounds so exciting, huh?

No chapter this week

I’ve been far too swamped with homework this week to finish Chapter 11, so I can’t post a chapter this week.  This should at least allow some people to catch up on what’s happened so far!  Or it should have no effect since not many come here anyway…

Chapter 8 posted!

Chapter 10 was a shorty, only about 1,000 words, but I finished it.  Thus I posted Chapter 8!  Enjoy.

If I can finish writing Chapter 11 by next Friday, Feb. 23rd, then I will post Chapter 9 on that day.  Chapter 9 is called The Mind Glass.  The end of the now posted Chapter 8 leads into it.

The novel is now at around a little over 32,000 words.  With the way I have it formatted in Word, it comes to exactly 100 pages at the end of Chapter 10.  Not bad, says I!  I give myself a pat on the back.  Ouch, I did it too hard.

Looking over my plans, I will have at least 30 chapters in all.  If I post at least one chapter a week, the entire novel will be posted some time in May… but there will most likely be more than 30 chapters as I will probably have to split the longer chapters into smaller chapters.  So who knows how long it will take… but if I can make at least 1,000 words a week, that’s not too bad.  I guess that’s a very low figure for professional writers, though.  Oh well.

Word count: 30,000

After typing up Chapter 9 last night, the word count currently stands at 30,184… which isn’t much compared to prolific authors who don’t have college homework to do, but it’s still the farthest I’ve ever gotten… and to think that in Nanowrimo you’re supposed to write 50,000!  Why did they stick Nanowrimo in a busy month anyway?

Well, if there’s anybody out there that is actually reading this post, I have a question… to what extent do you think a magical system in a fantasy novel needs to be explained to be believable and/or enjoyable?  Are you ever annoyed when magic just seems to come out of nowhere to solve a problem, or when you find yourself wondering why characters didn’t use magic for something?  Or would you get bored if the author tried for too long to explain how the rules of magic worked instead of just getting on with the story?  It’s a question I’ve thought a lot about while writing, and I’ll hopefully find a balance, but so far all the magic mentioned in the posted chapters happens with little explanation… just curious as to any thoughts on the matter… :)

Chapter 7 posted!

I just finished writing Chapter 9, but it still needs to be typed into the computer.  This means that I have met my first deadline, which means it’s time to post Chapter 7!  In this chapter, Skelan, Mosara, and Kaltin travel to the Woodkan Marsh to protect a Gynwig Stone… but somebody gets murdered. :( Enjoy!

Coming up next Friday, February 16th, is Chapter 8, entitle Turbel’s Messy Mountain Home,in which Skelan walks into Turbel’s home in the Honeg Mountains.  Chapter 8 should be interesting because Mosara becomes a viewpoint character, and we’ll start to see what she’s thinkin’… :) So let’s hope I can finish Chapter 10 by then so I stay ahead of the game… The Game of Gynwig that is!  Oh, I’m so funny!

Happy reading! :)

The Worst Thing About Writing

The worst thing about writing is that you get new ideas… and after you get these new ideas, you get excited and you want to work on them, plan out the story, and start writing.  But you can’t.  Because you have to finish what you already started… and you’re so far away from the finish line.

However, the good thing about having to wait to work on your next idea is that you have time for it to form itself in your head for a while… like, years… so ideally, by the time I finish this novel, my next will be just about fully planned out in my head!

Welcome!

Howdy.  This little corner of Wizard Walk is dedicated to my children’s fantasy book-in-progress, which I have referred to a couple times on the main site.  As I write the novel, I plan to post about my progress here.  As of writing this post, I am working on Chapter 9, and have posted Chapters 1-6.  My hope is that I can finish and post at least one chapter a week, thus Chapter 7 will be posted on Feb. 9th, 2007.  This should encourage me to keep up the writing, so I guess we’ll see what happens…

The chapters you’ll find here are unedited.  It’s currently more important to actually write the novel than to edit for clarity, typos, grammar, etc., though I’m sure errors exist.

If you’re interested enough, or bored enough, to read my beautiful prose, then I wish you good fortune.  Put on a little Mozart, get some hot chocolate, force the cat to stay on your lap to keep you warm, sit back, relax, put on your glasses if you need to, and enjoy!
