The Game of Gynwig
The Game of Gynwig is an unfinished epic fantasy novel by Sean Patrick Hannifin. It tells the story of a kingdom that learns that it was originally created as gigantic game board for battling wizards.
Hannifin began writing the story for NaNoWriMo 2006. He didn't get to 50,000 words quickly enough to "win" NaNoWriMo, but the wordcount did eventually exceed 50,000 after quite a few more months of work. Not following his outlines carefully enough, however, he strayed from his plans so much that he wasn't sure what to do, so he just stopped writing.
Reading back over his writing, Hannifin thinks that the prose is pretty awful, far too overly descriptive. He reckons this came from the fact that he had been reading some Ayn Rand just prior to writing. The Game of Gynwig contains awful writing, such as: "Mosara uttered the words, not as an honest consideration, but as a plea against an unnamed fear, a fear she did not fully understand, felt only through the voice and eyes of her witch mentor," and "Green grass and weeds of all sorts imposed their existence in the foul water, creating an impossible labyrinth for any frog who dared leap into the unwelcoming bog."
